About Gökçe Altay

Composer, Music Theorist, Instructor, Choir Conductor

Gökçe ALTAY was born in Istanbul. She followed her first music education at the age of 12 at Ankara State Conservatory, Piano Dept. Following that, she was accepted to Bilkent University, Music and Performing Arts Faculty, Theory – Composition Dept. with full scholarship. During her study at Bilkent University, she was accepted to study composition at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, with Theo Verbey, and later, music theory at Rotterdam Conservatory, with Peter Jan Wagemans and Patrick van Deurzen. After receiving her Bachelor Degrees from both institutes, she followed the Masters Degree program on the subject of ‘Electroacoustic Music’, at CODARTS, Rotterdam, with René Uijlenhoet, Roderik de Man, Yannis Kyriakides, Peter-Jan Wagemans, Robin de Raaf and Klaas de Vries. After completing this study with “high degree”, she returned to Turkey. In abroad, she joined into various projects [e.g. Asko Ensemble, 8×7 Project; Axyz Ensemble “Ebb and Flow”, Improvisation Worldwide Rotterdam], concert organizations (Gaudeamus Music Weeks; The Unanswered Question), workshops/master classes (e.g. George Crumb [composition]; Prof. Charles Rosen [music theory and performance practice]) and radio programs. She also gave seminaries, and worked as instructor at Rotterdam Conservatory for several years.

She released her first CD in the Netherlands with Karnatic Lab Records in the project Ebb and Flow in 2009. In 2010 she completed her doctoral study under the supervision of Prof. Gürer Aykal (conductor, state artist). At the same year she was invited to several festivals including “Istanbul 2010” and after, she worked as artistic director and composer of electronic and electro acoustic music in “Bilkent New Music Days” festival in 2011 and 2012.

In 2012, she became associated professor in the field of music theories. Her second collective CD is released at the same year in Turkey.

In 2013, she released her most recent CD, AYUR Trio by Kalan Music by arranging folk songs for this trio.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökçe ALTAY currently works as instructor, academic advisor and Erasmus Exchange Program coordinator at Bilkent University, Music and Performing Arts Faculty, at Theory and Composition Department.
